The Windows NT Server 4.0 Option Pack delivers the following new application
and communications services, that enable the development of the next generation of distributed applications on Windows NT Server 4.0:
Internet Information Server 4.0
Microsoft Windows NT Server operating system is the most complete server
platform for your most demanding Internet and corporate intranet needs. It
transforms the Web into simply another part of your operating system with its built-in integrated Web server, Microsoft Internet Information Server. Whether you're serving up pages to your local workgroup your intranet, or the Internet at large, Windows NT Server is the platform of choice.
Windows NT Server enables comprehensive and dynamic full-text
searches with the free downloadable Index Server. Professional-quality
Web sites are easy to create and manage with the included Microsoft
FrontPage« Web site creation and management tool software. And WINS-DNS
integration makes TCP/IP addresses much easier to manage. Best of all,
these tools are totally integrated into the operating system to make it
easy for you to use and administer your network, increase system flexibility
and scalability, and maintain centralized and comprehensive security. Windows NT Server offers everything you want for your complete intranet solution, and more.
Microsoft Transaction Server 2.0
Microsoft Transaction Server is a component-based transaction processing
system for developing, deploying and managing, high-performing, scalable,
and robust enterprise, Internet and intranet server applications. Microsoft
Transaction Server combines the flexibility and low cost of desktop applications with the mission-critical transaction processing features normally found in high-end mainframe systems.
Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) 2.0 is a built-in feature of Windows NT Server 4.0, Standard and Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition 4.0. In addition, existing licensees of these operating system platforms can obtain Microsoft Transaction Server through the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.
Machines that invoke MTS-based components running on Windows NT Server require a Microsoft Windows NT Server Client Access License (CAL). Machines that already have an existing CAL for access to services such as print services and file sharing do not need to acquire an additional CAL in order to use MTS Clients.
Microsoft Message Queue Server 1.0
Microsoft Message Queue Server (MSMQ) version 1.0 is an important new feature of Microsoft Windows NT operating system that provides loosely-coupled and reliable network communications services based on a messaging queuing model. Microsoft Message Queue Server makes it easy to integrate applications, implement a push-style business event delivery environment between applications and build reliable applications that work over unreliable but cost-effective networks. Because of the superior ease-of-use,
integrated and comprehensive feature set of MSMQ, Microsoft expects that Microsoft Message Queue Server will quickly become the message queuing technology of choice for Microsoft Windows operating system-based applications.
MSMQ 1.0 is included as a feature of both Microsoft Windows NT Server, Standard Edition 4.0 and Microsoft Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition 4.0 at no additional charge. Customers that need support for more than 25 clients, cost-based routing, or the MSMQ Connector should run Microsoft Message Queue Server on Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition 4.0. Existing licensees of Windows NT Server 4.0 can obtain Microsoft Message Queue Server through the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.
Machines running the MSMQ Dependent Client or the MSMQ Independent Client require a Microsoft Windows NT Server Client Access License (CAL) in order to access MSMQ-based servers (which must run on Microsoft Windows NT Server, Standard or Enterprise). Machines that already have an existing CAL for access to services such as print services and file sharing do not need to purchase an additional CAL in order to use MSMQ clients.
Internet Connection Services for Microsoft RAS
To meet the needs of an increasingly mobile and remote workforce, companies are seeking new ways to simplify employee remote access, reduce remote access costs, and maintain network security. The Microsoft Windows NT Server operating system addresses these needs today, by providing multiprotocol remote access features to corporate LAN's via traditional dial-up networking over a phone network and secure virtual private networking (VPN) via the Internet.
The Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack new Internet Connection Services (ICS) are
enhancements to the current Windows NT 4.0 Server remote access service.
These enhancements enable corporations to further reduce remote access
costs through customizable client software, centrally managed phone book
services, integrated authentication services, and simple administrative tools.
The Windows NT Server Internet Connection Services can be employed to implement an economical communication infrastructure that takes advantage of the Internet and ISP services to reduce remote access costs for any corporation. These technologies can also be used to lower the total cost of remote access services by outsourcing remote access hardware, administration, and support to an ISP. For a corporation, the benefits of implementing Windows NT Server Internet Connection Services include improved client productivity, lower access fees, and centralized management of network access point phone numbers.
